Aberdeenshire’s annual Doors Open Days, coordinated at a national level by
the Scottish Civic Trust, and locally by the Historic Environment Team within the
Planning & Economy Service, will be hosting an event in 2024 giving visitors
access to buildings across the Shire over the weekend of Saturday 21 and
Sunday 22 September. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the event,
Doors Open Days is Scotland’s largest free festival celebrating the built
environment. Through providing free unique viewing opportunities to sites of
historic, cultural, architectural and community interest, it aims to increase public
appreciation and enjoyment of Scotland’s built heritage and promote inclusion
in Scotland’s civic spaces and activities.

The full list of properties opening for the event will be available closer to the event.Image of historic properties in Aberdeenshire.

This year, the Scottish Civic Trust are supporting the European Heritage theme
for 2024, ‘Heritage of Routes, Networks and Connections’:

Society is built on networks that have allowed for exchanges in trade, religious
beliefs, scientific knowledge, technological innovations, and shared cultural and
artistic practices. Ancient routes, cities or villages, business establishments,
religious buildings, post houses, towers, fortifications, and many other elements of
our built environment are evidence of these exchanges. This theme is an
opportunity to again travel these roads, routes and paths of history to discover
what we can learn from them today. It is a chance to explore how our local
heritage is connected to a wide variety of influences.’
