Paul Mengelberg was one of the true eye-witnesses as the bombs fell. This took place on 22nd July 1940 – 81 years ago this last week.
James Duff, 2nd Earl of Fife, planted 7,000 acres of trees and freely describes how to achieve this on poor land and non-favourable climate.
At 83 foot long and 21 feet in beam, the schooner “Baron Skene” was launched by John and William Geddie in Banff and sailed on her maiden voyage on 3rd May 1874. She got just about a mile!

At Duff House there were very grand plans for what would have been a truly wonderful library space, to take the 15,000 books amassed by the Duffs. Today the Library in Duff House is the Dunimarle Collection of about 4,500 books; a wonderful Library in it’s own right.

The Roy map of 1747 gives a sketch of both Banff and Down (although the latter is not named) and it does show the King’s Ford across the river. The first bridge was started in 1763 and opened in 1765.
